I say anything by Isabelle Allende, mainly because I haven't read anything by her, and I've heard she's really good.

I'm gonna have to vote to skip the handmaids tale. I've read it before and seen the movie several times.
I haven't read Isabelle Allende but I'm game if the book looks good.
oh, wait! we gotta pic a genre!

Just thought about this....how about series books? This is my first book club so I new but excited! Has anyone heard of this author....Stieg Larsson? I see his book on Amazon's Editor's Pick for 2010.

I've heard of him, and I've read the first two books. I've got the third on my Kindle, but haven't been able to get into it.

I also vote to skip the Handmaid's Tale...it was a great book but I've read it several times (haven't discussed it with other people since high school though!).
Here are just a few from my personal book list that I've wanted to read for a while and haven't gotten around to yet:
Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand Choke or Lullaby - Chuck Palahniuk Persuasion - Jane Austen Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe
As for genre, I'm open to trying relatively anything. I'm not a big fan of "chick lit" or the trendy vampire-inspired books. I'm a BIG fan of classics.

We need to pick genres!
There is a poll currently showing in the "genres" section - if your particular genre isn't showing let me know and we'll add it in.
Right now it seems that Fantasy is in the lead followed by thrillers, then novels and finally non-fiction.

Personally, I vote against series if that can be helped. I am a little (very) OCD, and if we don't read an entire series, but only say, the first one, then I will have a very hard time not going out and finishing the rest of the series, even if it is not on the book club list. Going off of the Fantasy genre: The Mists of Avalon, Marion Zimmer Bradley library.outpost10f.com/fantasy/reviews/mists.htmlDark Lord of Derkholm, Dianna Wynne Jones library.outpost10f.com/fantasy/reviews/derkholm.htmlThriller: Whiteout, Ken Follett www.amazon.com/Whiteout-Ken-Follett/dp/0451215710/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1290183061&sr=1-1In the Shadow of the Law, Kermit Roosevelt www.amazon.com/Shadow-Law-Novel-Kermit-Roosevelt/dp/0312425880/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290183135&sr=8-1

I'm the same way with series, so I'm good with skipping them.
I've read MZB's Avalon a million times, too (its on my bookshelf) so I want to skip that one, too.

It's hard to find recommended fantasy novels that people haven't read. Unfortunately, from what I've noticed, people who like fantasy, REALLY *like* fantasy, and have read a lot of titles in that category. I've read Mists of Avalon before too. I don't mean to keep suggesting books that people have read before. I'll try to google some new, "up & coming" authors later. My only concern then is that my local library may not have the book yet. Plus, I only know what was on my school's required reading list, so can only avoid those.
